Heading back in time Okuku Country Estate, New Zealand
It’s quite appropriate that The Lord of the Rings film trilogy was made in picture-postcard New Zealand and that Okuku Country Estate is also like walking back in time – 80 years ago. This is a grand house of the 1920s which has become a poorly-kept secret as one of the most relaxing hideaway lodges in heartland New Zealand.

This is a tranquil destination, if you can imagine where cellphones and laptops seem out of place. I felt naked the first 3-4 hours that I couldn’t use my laptop in my room. By the end of my stay I felt fully dressed and relaxed again – without my cellphone.

As I entered the long drive way, about an hour from the Christchurch international airport, I suddenly entered a world I had only read about in early 20th century novels. Okuku is a grand homestead in the Canterbury foothills.

There are old black and white photos inside of the men setting off on a hunt. The original billiards room, billiards table and large open fire is unchanged from a bygone era.

A natural environment
Okuku has been lovingly and stunningly restored by owners Rob and Lorraine Smith. They are from Christchurch but lived in Sydney for 25 years – Rob as a pharmacist and Lorraine as a principal of a private girls school. They returned ‘home’ and spent a year doing up Okuku.

To describe how gracious, sweeping, peaceful and relaxing Okuku is does not do justice to the restorative work and natural environment of the state. Within an hour of arriving, I had even ventured beyond the front veranda. I sat in a comfy wicker chair sipping tea and sandwiches flicking through magazines. I could hear the sound of the bees and birds working their colourful flower garden – there were no other sounds.

The sun beat down and so much to see but I couldn’t move. Time stood still at Okuku. Lorraine finally showed me around the gardens, the little cottage for special friends, her immaculate vegetable and herb garden, the trees, the manicured flower garden – still not a sound but our feet crunching on the small whitened gravel driveway. For the first time in my life, the world had stopped and I was in heaven.

Dining with Ernest Hemingway
I had a spa in the pool room before showering myself in Linden Leave products and dressing neatly for the evening meal. As I tip-toed down the sweeping staircase and gazed at the grand wood-panelled walls, patina-beaten wooden floors, rich textured rugs, with soft music floating about, I thought for a moment I might be dining with P G Woodhouse, Ernest Hemingway or the King of England. Instead I spend a most fabulous evening with friends and farmers Harry and Virginia Pawsey.

I sipped Pegasus Bay chardonnay with my entree-honey seared salmon and asparagus salad and then another glass with pumpkin Thai coconut curry and rounded off by vanilla panna cotta with orange and strawberry salad.

I leaned back from the 1840 flame mahogany dining table like I was in paradise.

Rakahuri
The next morning I woke to more silence and enjoyed tea and toast before I bike ride to the most moving small country cemetery I have ever seen. The Birch Hill gravesite is set in an amphitheatre of trees, neatly mown and with a stone alter it is one place on earth I could easily rest at the end of my days. I returned to Okuku to learn more about the lodge, originally known as Rakahuri in 1860. But it was razed in a fire in 1917 and the ‘new’ Okuku was built in 1920.

Today Lorraine and Rob are enjoying the fruits of their labour at Okuku. I want to return, again and again.

Sleep with Lennon & McCartney at Liverpool’s Hard Days Night Hotel

The concept of a Beatles-inspired hotel has been prevalent in Liverpool and amongst Beatles enthusiasts in the city for over two decades. 2004 saw the dream become a reality as plans were finalised to convert Central Buildings into the Hard Days Night Hotel. The hotel opened early 2008, and is situated in the Beatles quarter of Liverpool on the corner of Mathew Street.

Hard Days Night Hotel is a four-star boutique hotel in Liverpool featuring Beatles-inspired artwork.

The stunning grade II listed hotel opened on 1st February 2008 and coincides with Liverpool’s tenure as the 2008 European Capital of Culture. The objective was to create a unique environment offering high-quality hotel facilities with an exciting and interesting ‘twist’.

A white grand piano
The building itself was designed by Thomas C Clarke and dates back to 1884. It was constructed in a classic design with imposing marble columns; a feature of the front elevation and the internal spiral staircase both of which have been restored during the development.

The hotel features 110 guest rooms, including luxury and deluxe rooms, and two specially designed Lennon and McCartney penthouse suites – the Lennon suite featuring a white grand piano.

Both suites enjoy panoramic views across the city of Liverpool. Each of the 110 rooms will tell a different part of The Beatles story through original artwork, created by Beatles artist Shannon, in a subtle yet challenging way. Striking artwork
Beatiful artwork dorns the walls of Hard Days Night Hotel telling the story of The Beatles from the ‘basement to the roof’ through the 110 guest bedrooms and public rooms. The hotel also includes two stunning penthouses – the specially designed Lennon & McCartney suites dedicated to the life and times of these two Beatles.

The pieces of artwork have been created in either sepia tone, black and white or vivid colour. There are previously unseen archived photographs of the band, works of art from Julia Baird, Paul Saltzman, Paul Ygartua, Klaus Voormann and Bill Zygmant to name just a few. The hotel also contains memorabilia and artefacts all connected to the band and placed throughout the public rooms.

The Lennon Suite
The Lennon Suite, situated on the 4th floor of the hotel pays homage to John Lennon. The light, airy suite has a clean, minimalist décor with a white colour scheme. The living area comprises desk, sofas, coffee table, white baby grand piano, two large prints of John Lennon illuminated in ultraviolet by a stage light, numerous artefacts and a sliding door leading to a generous balcony.

The contemporary bathroom contains two sinks, bath, shower and toilet. The bedroom is furnished with a double bed, large metallic floor lamp and plasma screen television mounted into built-in wardrobes.

The McCartney Suite
The McCartney Suite on the 5th floor is a tribute to Sir Paul McCartney. The stylish suite has a modern, funky décor with a vibrant colour scheme. Tasting the best southern hideaways in NZ – just an occupational hazard!

This was the luxury journey to end all luxury trips: staying at four of the best resorts in New Zealand – three of them judged among the best hideaway spots in the world. The assignment: Six days and seven nights to enjoy Matakauri, Blanket Bay, Eichardt’s and Millbrook in and around Queenstown.

My wife Chrissy and I land at the Adventure Capital of the world at 5pm and threw ourselves at the mercy of the warm and sincere staff at Matakauri Lodge – one of the top 101 hotels of the world according to Tatler magazine.

General manager Grant Alley and his staff were first rate – our room had a stunning view – we were in heaven. We even received a little Kiwi fluffy soft toy as a go-away present.

Next day we go on a romantic cruise to Walter Peak on the 96-year old ferry the Earnslaw, known as the Lady of the Lake. In the afternoon it’s a helicopter ride around the glaciers and dazzling white mountain tops, with Heliworks. Our pilot Steve Scott is a fantastic guy. Heliworks has been involved in filming Peter Jackson’s movies. Another of their pilots Alfie Speight is big in the Kiwi film industry.

We get back to our sanctuary at Matakauri, among the tui, native frogs and lakeside setting. The next morning we trundle around the lake to Blanket Bay, twice rated by Harper’s as one of the two most romantic hideaways in the world.

Blanket Bay

Blanket Bay is a place every couple who can save $1500 once in their life should go and spend a night at. It is the grandest lodge ever.

I loved the heavily texture wood : massive grey weathered supports and fine furniture pieces with burnished rich patina. Philip Jenkins is a brilliant general manager with a superb dry wit. The local staff were excellent. Unlike some lodges, Philip insisted there was no dress code.

Their games room was a blokesy den with a free bar. Before tea, I did a 30 minute jog through the bush and then around the shore edge of the lake back to the hotel: if felt like running in paradise. My seared grouper meal and Corbans Cottage Block chardonnay made me feel even better.

Room No. 2 in the world’s best small hotel
Next day I drive back to Queenstown, where I spend the night at Eichardt’s – judged the best small hotel in the world three or four years ago. My suite, room No.2, is possible the best appointed I have ever stayed in. Victoria, Charlotte, Catherine and all the Eichardt’s staff could not be more caring and helpful. The massive possum fur rug on my bed was an utterly romantic touch. Their service is second to none. They became great friends.

I go out for dinner on the Steamer Wharf at the Wai, which according to the Cafe magazine is one of the best restaurants in NZ. I can see why! I melted on the line caught grouper – flown in especially for Wai from Fiordland. And all washed down by a stunning glass of Hunter’s sauvignon blanc.

The next day I head to the expansive lodge and golf resort of Millbrook – I loved the painting in my villa lounge – because behind it is the secret flat screen tv! My steam infusion spa was so relaxing and envigorating – thanks to the wonderful therapist Minaxie Daya. Outstanding marketing manager Sarah Stacey looked after me superbly and I so want to return to Millbrook. There is so much to see in these parts with wineries, rides, bungy jumps, skiing. I’ll have to come back next year.

Will you be travelling in space in 2012?

The Space Tourism Company Galactic Suite already has about 40 reservations made by tourists who in 2012 will travel to the hotel to spend four days at 450 kilometers from the Earth. The trip, which will cost 3 million euros, also includes 18 weeks of preparation for the tourists to acquire experience in space. This preparation will take place on an island in the Caribbean, where the participants can travel with their families.

The company is now working in the programme of activities that tourists will undertake during the four days.

“Tourists come to the hotel with all the necessary items to stay, as if they were staying at the most extreme refuge on earth”

, explained the founder and director of Galactic Suite, Xavier Claramunt.

“This refuge will offer a mixed programme of reflection and exercise to seize the unique physical conditions encountered in space”.

The first “SPA” in space
One of the most innovative experiences that tourists can experience is the bathroom in zero gravity. To that end, the team of engineers and architects of Galactic Suite have developed the spa space, the first spa to be installed at 450 kilometers from Earth, one of the modules of the hotel.

The spa will float within acontaining a water bubble of 20 litres. The tourist, already trained to avoid the effects of water in a state of weightlessness, can play with the bubble dividing it into thousands of bubbles in a never-ending game. In addition, the transparent sphere may be shared with other guests.

The new Galactic Spaceport Suite, the first commercial spaceport in the world, will be built on an island in the Caribbean and the project will be signed by the company Equip architecture, also based in Barcelona. Galactic Suite does not rule out building new spaceports in the future in other countries around the world, in order to facilitate accessibility to other hotels built in space to as many people as possible.

Programming four days in space
Tourists come to the hotel with all the necessary items needed to spend four days in space, as if they were arriving at the most extreme refuge on the earth. In this refuge a mixed programme of meditation/reflection will be as well as exercise to seize the unique physical conditions offered by the space and deepen the understanding of oneself.

Day 1:
Arrival and acclimatization
On arrival tourists will be offered an energy cocktail and will be welcomed to their rooms to leave luggage, rest and acclimatize to space travel. While the tourists rest, crew members will check system development. After the tourists have rested, and make a fully functioning hotel, the crew will make the first connection to earth so that tourists can greet loved ones and address the media upon request. Space tourists will be allowed to boast a bit. Diner is made for all and after eating, tourists and crew will withdraw to their rooms to rest after the first day.

Day 2 and Day 3:
Excitement and meditation
Corporate module: Travellers will be introduced to the possibilities of the body in weightlessness. These exercises are not required to keep in shape physically but are designed to fully experience the special conditions facing the human body outside the atmosphere. This will give the tourist a tape cylindrical endless bike where you can exercise your legs and arms.

The most amazing experience that can be found in module ‘corpore’ is the bathroom in gravity zero.

This is an activity specifically designed to float within a transparent sphere in which we will introduce a bubble of water of 20 litres. The tourist, already trained to avoid the effects of water in a state of weightlessness, can play with the bubble dividing it into thousands of bubbles in a never-ending game.

Mens Module: This module is more personal. It’s a space where tourists may be compiled privately to rest.

Also in this module the starry universe and the Earth can be observed as well as read, write, consult the media and to connect the Earth.

The module will be configured as a womb in which tourists can float in complete weightlessness. Living on a Cloud 9
Cloud 9’s luxurious lofts, and the one and only Presidential Ibiza Loft feature hardwood parquet floors, private terraces partially with oversized bathtubs and spectacular harbour views. Special amenities, such as a pillow menu and welcome packs, guarantee a more than relaxing stay.

Like all rooms in the Aguas, the Cloud 9 lofts also come equipped the latest technologies – including digital cable TV shown on chic Bang & Olufsen monitors and state-of-the-art, energy-saving domotics for personalized lighting and curtain control.

The interior design by Kim Castells and Jordi Cuenca of Triade Studio is strongly influenced by the Mediterranean. Dominating colours on the first three floors are blue and white for a crisp and fresh impression whereas in Cloud 9 warm tones like beige and brown are used to create an intimate atmosphere.

The Torres family describes the style of the hotel as “eco-luxurious” combining eco-friendly materials and technology as well as Feng Shui interior design with an indulging touch.

As one of the first hotels worldwide Aguas de Ibiza reduces energy usage by more than 35 percent in comparison to other properties in the luxury segment.

Rooftop pool
The Aguas offers a gym, climatized pools with mineral salts, three outdoor pools - including one on the rooftop with impeccable views over the marina - a beauty salon and a boutique, with wireless Internet available throughout the hotel.

The on-site Business Centre spans 4,300 square feet and consists of a private garden as well as a multi-use hall that can host up to 300 people. It can also be divided into three independent function rooms.For top management, the Aguas offers the innovative High Performance Executive Centre.

Aguas de Ibiza has plenty to offer those guests searching for relaxation, rejuvenation or some good ole’ fun.

Its sumptuous Revival Wellness Club, conceived by wellness expert Félix Prado, was inspired by the Mediterranean waters for which the Aguas is named and is accordingly devoted to the therapeutic properties of H2O.
